  • Maker: Stanley Rule & Level Co., New Britain, Conn.
  • Date: c1900
  • Description and Notes:

The above picture shows the two sides of this two fold boxwood carpenter's rule. The slider featured on which is called "Plain Slide" as opposite to the "Gunter Slide," for it is engraved with only the normal English length units in inches instead of the Gunte scale as which found on the Rabone's slide rule of this collection. This type of slider is commonly used for finding the depth of a hole. This rule also has the E & M scales on one side, which, according to an article on A Source Book for Rule Collectors, pp. 116-118, were used for measuring the length of the sides of an octagon cut from a square section piece, and were sometimes called the Mastmakers Scales. Another source (an eBay seller) indicated that this slide rule was manufactured by the Stanley Rule & Level Co. from 1854 to 1917.
