- Maker: G. Schoenner
- Date: c1900
- Description and Notes:
There is no maker's mark on the instruments or the case, but at first glance, the instruments looks almost identical to the early pattern of the
Riefler's round system set as those advertised in the 1893 Special exhibition catalogue of the Deutsche mechanic and optic manufacturers. However, apart from the appearance, they are in fact unique in that they are equipped with a patented handle self-centering mechanism. The patent number of which, as stamped on the handle joint, is D.R.P. 121855, where D.R.P. stands for Deutsches Reich Patent. According to the 1903 edition of the Taschenbuch Für Präzisionsmechaniker, Optiker, Elektromechaniker Und Glasinstrumentenmacher, p. 190, this patent was granted to Georg Schoenner in 1901. It should be noted that Schoenner had modified the mechanism and subsequently obtained a number of US patents in the next few years, see, for example, US patent 723041, 806581, and 902257. But the shape of the instruments shown in these patents are different from the presented ones. Therefore this set should be an early example, and, hence, can be dated to the begining of the twentieth century.
