Antique Drawing Instrument Collection - Early European Continent Set

Bookmark this page Early European Continent Set

  • Maker: N/A
  • Date: c1780
  • Description and Notes:

Except a letter O enclosed in a laurel wreath stamped on top of the lid of the flat leather covered wooden case, there is no signature or mark on any of the instruments of this set to identify its maker. Nevertheless, a larger set which contains instruments of nearly identical design to the ones of this set can be found in Drawing Instruments, 1580-1980, pp. 184-185, plate XVI, and which has been identified to be of Italian origin and is dated to mid-18th century. Indeed, the long joint construction of the divider, the extensive use of hand made wing screws, and the nature suede lining of the case all indicate an early date of this set. In addition, as often found in the cases of the same period, there is a circular recess on the left to fit a porcelain water-color dish, which, however, is now missing.
